Top Democrats, Republicans Clash Over Developments in Department of Justice Probe

Top lawmakers clashed over the Department of Justices probe into the origins of the investigation into President Donald Trumps campaign, with Democrats claiming Trump has politicized the department and Republicans pushing back.

The clashes took place amid reports that the departments probe shifted from an administrative review to a criminal inquiry.

“These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under AG Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President Trumps political revenge,” House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) said in a joint statement late Oct. 24, linking to a New York Times report about the alleged shift.

“If the Department of Justice may be used as a tool of political retribution, or to help the President with a political narrative for the next election, the rule of law will suffer new and irreparable damage.”
