A former Honduran mayor and admitted mass murderer testified in Manhattan court Monday that he personally witnessed Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman deliver a $1 million bribe to the political campaign of current Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández.
The testimony surfaced at the trial of the presidents brother, Juan Antonio Hernandez Alvarado, in federal court for alleged drug-trafficking.
Amilcar Alexander Ardon, a murderous former Honduran mayor-turned-government witness in the case, told federal jurors that he saw the $1 million in cash — bundled in $50,000 and $100,000 piles — laid out on the table by Guzman during a meeting with Hernandez Alvarado.
Prosecutors said last week during openings in Hernandez Alvarados trial that jurors could expect to hear about a bribe made by Guzman, who is currently serving a life sentence plus 30 years in a Colorado super-max prison for drug-trafficking.
Ardon testified that the meeting took place in the Honduran municipality of El Paraiso when he served as the mayor.
