US Customs and Border Protection is probing a private Facebook group allegedly made up of its CBP agents that was filled with chatter about harming and sexually abusing congress members — including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Assistant Commissioner of the Office of Professional Responsibility Matthew Klein called the posts “disturbing” and acknowledged the Facebook group may consist of members of his agency.
“Today, U.S. Customs and Border Protection was made aware of disturbing social media activity hosted on a private Facebook group that may include a number of CBP employees,” Klein said in a statement. “CBP immediately informed DHS Office of the Inspector General and initiated an investigation.”
US Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost blasted the Facebook groups behavior, saying in a statement, “These posts are completely inappropriate and contrary to the honor and integrity I see – and expect – from our agents day in and day out. Any employees found to have violated our standards of conduct will be held accountable.”
The existence of the group named “Im 10-15,” which is Border Patrol code for “aliens in custody,” was first reported Monday morning by ProPublica.
Posts to the secret group, reportedly consisting of current and former CBP officials, joked about the deaths of migrants and, among other things, posted a meme of Ocasio-Cortez engaged in sex at a migrant facility.
The freshman congresswoman, who forged ahead with the planned visit, addressed the online mockery on Twitter before visiting migrant detention centers near El Paso with other members of Congress, including Reps. Veronica Escobar of Texas, Joaquin Castro of Texas and Rashida Tlaib of Minnesota.
“This just broke: a secret Facebook group of 9,500 CBP officers discussed making a GoFundMe for officers to harm myself & Rep. Escobar during our visit to CBP facilities & mocked migrant deaths,” the New York Democrat tweeted. “This isnt about a few bad eggs. This is a violent culture.”
”9,500 CBP officers sharing memes about dead migrants and discussing violence and sexual misconduct towards members of Congress. How on earth can CBPs culture be trusted to care for refugees humanely?,” the freshman lawmaker posted. “PS I have no plans to change my itinerary
