Donald Trump‘s deputy chief of staff has quit his job to pursue a career in the private sector.

Rick Dearborn, who served under chief of staff John Kelly, will step down in January.

Kelly said: ‘Rick loyally served the president for two and a half years and brought tremendous energy to the White House staff.

‘He’s a super guy and it breaks my heart to see him leave, but I look forward to his continued personal friendship and support for the president’s agenda.’

Kelly was recently forced to address rumors he was going to be fired or quit.

The chief of staff took to the podium to defend his role, saying: ‘I’m not quitting today, I don’t believe — and I just talked to the president — I don’t think I’m being fired today. And I’m not so frustrated in this job that I’m thinking of leaving.’

Kelly went on: ‘I would tell you this is the hardest job I’ve ever, this is in my view the most important job I’ve ever had. I would offer though that it’s not the best job I’ve ever had.

‘The best job I’ve ever had — as I’ve said many times — is when I was an enlisted Marine sergeant. That is the best job I’ve ever had.’

His entrance to Washington was turbulent because it sparked the sacking of Anthony Scaramucci — Trump’s old head of communications who lasted just ten days in the job.

At the time, Scaramucci said he felt like he wanted to give Kelly the space to settle into the role with fresh staff.
