China should prepare for world war to break out with North Korea at any time between now and March, according to a former top military commander.
Former Lieutenant General Wang Hongguang urged the country’s north east regions to mobilise in anticipation of conflict on the peninsula.
Hongguang, a former deputy commander of the Nanjing Military Area Command, issued the warning amid a growing nuclear threat from the hermit country.
He told the Global Times: ‘The war on the Korean Peninsula might break out anytime between now and March next year.
‘China should be psychologically prepared for a potential Korean war, and the north east China regions should be mobilized for that.
‘Such mobilisation is not to launch a war, but for defensive purposes.’
Military expert and TV commentator Soing Zhongping also said China should deploy anti-missile weapons in the border area and prepare humanitarian aid for war refugees.
He added that if war were to break out South Korea and China would face the most damage, while there will be a huge risk of being exposed to nuclear contamination and earthquakes.
Song is also quoted as saying: ‘Defensive action could lead to engagement if US action on the Korean Peninsula threatens China’s core interests.’
The Global Times is the English-language version of the People’s Daily, which is the official newspaper of the ruling Chinese Communist Party.
The warning comes just a few weeks after North Korea fired a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile which it claims could reach the US mainland.
