Schalke have suspended Max Meyer for the rest of the season after the midfielder gave an unauthorised interview in which he criticised the club for bullying him.

The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and the Bundesliga club have already confirmed he will leave for free after turning down a number of proposals to stay.

Meyers playing time has been reduced since he rejected the new deals on offer and club chief Clemens Tonnies took a sly dig at the midfielder by claiming he was motivated by money.

However, in an interview that angered Schalke, Meyer denied the claims and says he doesnt want to work under Sporting Director Christian Heidel.

It was never about the money, said Meyer.

Otherwise, I would have accepted the second, improved offer. And thats why I think its a disgrace when Clemens Tonnies tries to make it look like its only about the money for me.

I just wanted to leave Schalke and no longer work under Christian Heidel. Thats the truth. Recently, it felt like mobbing here.

Arsenal have been tracking Meyer for nearly six months and new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat was spotted at a recent Schalke game to scout the midfielder.

Mislintat played a big role in bringing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the club in January.
